![]() ![]() The Wicks Organ company built this factory in the first decade of the 1900s, and began operating there in 1910. In the following fifteen years, Wicks’ opus list increased to more than 1000. Mark Wick, former company president, shared in a 2007 news segment about his family’s company, “It’s not affected by temperature, it’s not affected by humidity, and the maintenance savings for churches can be very tremendous over the years because you don’t have to rebuild it like other actions.” 6 In their first thirteen years of operation, before the implementation of “Direct-Electric,” Wicks built 275 organs. 5 The system, patented in 1922-and again in 1929 following improvements-included a direct electrical connection from the key to the valve, which eliminated many of the problems associated with pneumatic organs. 4 The brothers and their descendants continued building organs throughout the early 20 th century, going on to invent their patented “Direct-Electric” action valve after thirteen years of building pneumatic instruments. After the success of this first organ, the Opus One, other churches in the area began to contact the Wicks for their services, leading to the creation of their business, the Wicks Organ Company. 3 The three brothers were, at the time, making watches, cabinets, and jewelry. Church, a Catholic church located on ninth street in Highland, contacted the Wick brothers to ask them to build a new organ. The factory quickly proved inadequate, and the company built and moved to a new factory in 1910. Leave Card: Our technicians will leave a card for listing all work done during the visit. The organ blower motors are oiled or greased as necessary. Systems Check: All mechanical systems are checked on every visit. Reeds are tuned, and any out-of-tune flue pipes are adjusted. The room must also be silent while the tuners are present.Ī touch-up tuning: Touch up tunings are preferred in mid-season. When tuning, the church must be as close to normal temperature as possible, that is, the temperature the church would be for a usual service at that time of year. ![]() Drastic changes in pitch, such as matching A=440 would incur an extra charge. If you notify us ahead of time, we will make every effort to accommodate your request, although we can suggest schedule options that will minimize your costs by grouping customers in one area. We will schedule our regular visits to fit your programming needs. ![]() Alternately, a Christmas season/Easter season schedule is often preferred. For the best maintenance of your organ, we recommend a semi-annual tuning schedule to match the change in seasons, such as in May or June, when the air conditioning first comes on, and in November or December, when the heat first becomes necessary. Regular visits also give our technicians the chance to foresee any large problems before they occur. Regular visits insure your organ is always kept in tune to match the change in seasons, and any problems are caught immediately and repaired. Regular tunings keep your organ in top playing condition.
